Hello, all throughout the month of March and May, I am going to blogging and shouting out to the various types of struggles that we all go through from time to time. Also this month, I will be doing more under the resource tab on the menu to add more resources to look at for you guys. First off let’s kick off this mental health awareness month with a definition of self-harm.
Self-Harm is Treatable.
Self-Harm – includes cutting or burning your skin; scratching to the point of bleeding; picking, and even embedding small objects into your flesh to harm yourself. This does not mean that the person is suicidal or wants to die, most of the time they want to feel something happening to their body. The emotions drown out that pain sometimes.
Sometimes it feels isolating living with a mental illness and I can relate to that aspect. I have friends that self-harm and I have actually helped a few clean up their wounds at my apartment from time to time, having some experience in wound care from firefighting. There is nothing I want more for this epidemic of self-harming to stop but we also need to realize there will be relapses and there will be struggles.
I want to let everyone know in solidarity that even though I have not self-harmed in the past, that I stand with you guys in our fight for a stigma-free society where people don’t judge you.
