Drones are the future of surveying. The future is bright and we can benefit as a field along with other fields. New technologies come and go, but I believe that with this newest breakthrough in drone technology we can finally transform the field of surveying for the better.
#1 – Collect points faster: Instead of collecting one or two points for a project at one time, we can fly the drone up into the sky to collect millions of points at one time.
#2 – Improve Accuracy: By removing human error in manual measurements, we can improve our accuracy, in order to gain data points that they can be used for decisions. With self-calibration technology on the drones, they can determine if they are off on measurement.
#3 – Cost Savings: For companies, they may be able to save between 25-30% of the cost of a project over time just by using the unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)/drone technology to gather data points.
#4 – Safer Work Areas: Having to climb mountains, hills or even rocky terrain of any kind is hard on the workers’ body. By using drone technology we can cut back on work-related injuries in the field.
#5 – Faster Processing Times: Before it would take weeks to turn around data, but with the new technology of using drones we can finally get plats to our clients faster! With the data processing speeds, you can work on multiple projects at a time and have more room for clientele available!
#6 – Data on the Cloud: Instead of having to drive many miles to get your data processed and create a map, you can store all of the data on the cloud, which can be viewed on most modern day computers right there on the job site. It is important to do this due to the fact you might find an error there and be able to fix it.
#7 – It Is Easy to Learn/Operate: The FAA recently released a ruling stating that non-pilots may operate the drones on the job site. This means that companies don’t have to rely on hiring pilots with licenses in order to do a survey. Millenials have grown up using tablets, laptops and other technologies that would be associated with the drones. Learning this technology will be as easy as that.
#8 – Precise Imaging: Using both the drone and the latest photographic capabilities, we can get better image quality of the plats for our clients. We can even beat the resolution used on Google maps!
#9 – Easy To Repair: With 3D printing technology, one could print out parts to maintain their drone cheaper than before when both technologies become cheaper and practical.
#10 – Opportunities: If you know how to operate a drone, it may get your company or if you are an individual more flexibility in the job market. It may make a job search much easier saying you have experience in operating drones.
In conclusion, drones are the future of our field and I would recommend anyone just joining the field to find a way to get that training in order to operate a drone successfully. With the newer technologies, we look forward to the future of our field.
